Volunteering Experience: The 6th TAFISA World Sport for All Games

20:44

Having a title attached to yourself doesn’t solely make everything works out easier in your life and it happened to me. I once thought that not long after I finished my study in uni, I’d get a proper job and have my own income. Sadly, it turned out wrong. Rather than getting my job applications accepted, I got a call from the committee of The 6th TAFISA World Sport for All Games instead.

TAFISA World Sport for All Games is a quadrennial event under the auspices of an international non-profit organisation called The Association For International Sport for All Games (TAFISA). Its purpose is to encourage people to be more active by involving in sport for all and any kind of physical activities. Indonesia was chosen to host of this amazing and inspiring event in 2016. The 6th TAFISA World Sport for All Games was held in Jakarta, 6th – 12th October 2016.

(Not my hand, anyway)

There were total 250 youths recruited to be the liaison officers (LO) of this event. All LOs were staying in a hotel near Pasar Baru during the whole event. I was assigned to be a liaison officer of Academic Events which consisted of seminars, workshops, and global forum which were held on 7th – 9th October 2016 in Best Western Hotel (for the seminars and workshops) and JIExpo Kemayoran (for the global forum).

As a LO, I was expected to get ready extra early every day and of course it was quite tiring but it was worth it all. New experiences, knowledge, and friends were the best part of it. I was assigned to stay in the main ball room for the seminars and workshops which indirectly ‘forced’ me to pay attention to the whole presentation for hours. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind to sit comfortably in a seminar but honestly sport was never my thing and I thought the seminars and workshops were going to bore me. Guess what? I was wrong.

The seminars, workshops, and global forum had a very interesting topic which was “Active Cities”. All the speakers came from different countries and shared the importance of moving our bodies frequently, the programmes being implemented in their cities involving the citizens to be active through sport for all, as well as some discussions regarding the solutions to make the cities around this world more active. Such discussions encouraged me to have a healthier living (which is what I am trying to do).

(Pardon my sleepy face)

There were 20 LOs assigned in Academic Events along with one coordinator who came from different occupations. Some of them were still students, plenty were fresh graduates, and the others were workers in companies. Every three LOs were living in the same room and we met every day during the event which made us somehow used to each other’s presence. Being a kind of introverted lady I am, this event helped me a lot to build new friendship.

Here are some pictures of my squad which are now my friends.

The next TAFISA World Sport for All Games will be held in Portugal in 2020. Hopefully I can go there and participate as one of the delegate from Indonesia.

'Till laterpeople!
